Background:Erectile dysfunction is a problem in males, affecting between 0.2 and 1.5% of men. The worldwide prevalence of erectile dysfunction has increased due to a growing number of drugs including drugs for erectile dysfunction.
Aim:The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of sildenafil (Viagra) in treatment of erectile dysfunction in men with pulmonary hypertension.
Methods:Forty-three patients with pulmonary hypertension and erectile dysfunction and their control subjects were randomized and double-blinded in a single-center, double-blinded, parallel-group study. The patients were initially evaluated with a medical record and clinical examination. The patients were then randomized to receive sildenafil at 100 mg/d for three consecutive days, or placebo. The patients were asked to refrain from sex for 48 h and then were observed for six months after their study was stopped.
Results:The average number of patients per study was 2.7 patients in the sildenafil group, and the average number of patients per study was 3.7 in the placebo group. The mean age of the patients was 66.5 years, and the average age of the patients was 65.3 years in the sildenafil group and 65.7 years in the placebo group. Patients with pulmonary hypertension who were treated with sildenafil showed a lower incidence of ED, ED severity, ED duration, ED symptoms, and ED scores at 24, 36, and 48 h. There was no significant difference in the incidence of ED, ED severity, ED symptoms, and ED scores at 36, 48 h, and the mean of the incidence was 5.4 per patient in the sildenafil group and 4.1 in the placebo group. The mean of the incidence of ED, ED severity, and ED symptoms at 36, 48 h and the mean of the incidence was 8.2 per patient and 11.5 per patient in the sildenafil group and 8.2 per patient and 11.5 per patient in the placebo group.
Conclusions:The sildenafil group showed better treatment efficacy for erectile dysfunction in pulmonary hypertension, regardless of the dosage. The sildenafil group demonstrated better treatment efficacy for erectile dysfunction in patients with pulmonary hypertension.
Table 1 Characteristics of the sildenafil and placebo groups. Sildenafil group included patients with pulmonary hypertension and erectile dysfunction. Sildenafil group was included in the study. The incidence of ED, ED severity, and ED scores at 24, 36, and 48 h was 3.7, 4.1, and 2.6 per patient in the sildenafil group and 4.1, 4.6, and 1.8 per patient in the placebo group, respectively. The mean of the incidence of ED, ED severity, and ED scores at 36, 48 h and the mean of the incidence was 9.8 per patient and 10.1 per patient in the sildenafil group and 7.2 per patient in the placebo group. The mean of the incidence of ED, ED severity, and ED scores at 24, 36, and 48 h was 5.3, 5.2, and 3.4 per patient in the sildenafil group and 5.5, 5.6, and 2.5 per patient in the placebo group, respectively. The mean of the incidence of ED, ED severity, and ED scores at 24, 36, and 48 h was 8.4 per patient and 5.8 per patient in the sildenafil group and 7.2 per patient in the placebo group, respectively. The incidence of ED, ED severity, and ED scores at 24, 36, and 48 h was 6.5, 5.8, and 2.2 per patient in the sildenafil group and 5.8, 5.4, and 2.2 per patient in the placebo group, respectively.
